At 36 and above recruitment age, Ted joined the Australian Red Cross –paying his own way to the Western Front in France, though with a bit of help from friends – such as the people of Benalla, who generously raised funds for a Chevrolet car, which he used widely in France. His service was warmly appreciated by the ANZACs and Brits in France and England –as per a letter of appreciation in 1919.
Ted returned via America and on the way saw Californian bungalows – after returning to Australia, he went into land development and introduced this house style to Adelaide, in Tusmore and Burnside – plus the then village of Beaumont. His hobby was raising pigs – including introducing the now rare Wessex Saddleback breed to Australia.
