Son of Mary Jane (nee Trestrail) and John Place.
Occupation prior to enlistment – Blacksmith
Served in France and Belgium

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Pozieres in September, 1916 “for conspicuous gallantry during operations.  He guided working parties through heavy shell fire.  Though wounded, he stuck to his duty until he collapsed, more than five hours later.”

Killed in action on October 9, 1917 in Belgium aged 24.
Commemorated at The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Lieutenant H. L. PLACE, of Murat Bay, was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Place. He came to Adelaide to enlist for active service on his 21 st birthday. He left Australia in August, 1916, as sapper in the 6th Field Engineers. In 1916 he gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal in France, and shortly afterwards was promoted to second lieutenant. He was killed in action on October 9. He was a fine manly fellow, and was generally respected. He was a nephew of Mr. S. Trestrail, of Clare, and a cousin of Detective Trestrail, of Adelaide.

PLAYER, Leslie Martyn  MC

Son of Ernst Eduard SCHROEDER & Rosey PLAYER

He was educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide, and the University of Sydney.  He entered the service of the Bank in July 1919 at Kalgoorlie WA and was transferred in August 1914, to the Inspector's staff at the Head Office.  He was appointed ledger-keeper at Ryde, NSW in October 1914, and transferred to Moruya, as teller in June 1915.
Leslie Martyn Player enlisted on 19th July 1915 and was a member of the 13th Battalion of the AIF.  He served in France with distinction and was promoted to corporal in May 1916, to second lieutenant on 27th April 1917, and to lieutenant on 3rd October 1917.  For his bravery in leading two men and rushing a German machine gun position, killing the crew, and capturing the gun, Lieutenant Player was awarded the Military Cross.

No.1061 Lieutenant Thomas Playford was born at Norton Summit on 5 July 1896, the grandson of South Australian Premier, Thomas Playford 1837-1915. Thomas was working for his father as a gardener at the time of his attestation in May 1915 and being under age required his father's permission to enlist. A member of the 27th Battalion he served in France and was wounded in action on 5 November 1916, receiving a "severe" gun shot wound to the abdomen. He returned to duty in 1917 and was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in January 1919 and Lieutenant in April 1919 before returning to Australia aboard the Ypiranga in July 1919. In 1933 Playford was elected the Liberal and Country League Member for Murray and entered the South Australian House of Assembly. He was elected leader of the party and Premier in November 1938. He was to be Premier for 26 years and 266 days; the longest serving South Australian Premier.
